The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of Lady Mary Scott, who is the forth daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch.

  • Family Background: She was the fourth daughter of John Montagu Douglas Scott, 7th Duke of Buccleuch, one of Britain’s most prominent peers, and his wife Lady Margaret Bridgeman, daughter of the 4th Earl of Bradford.
  • Marriage: She married David Cecil, Lord Burghley (later the 6th Marquess of Exeter) on January 10, 1929, at St Martin-in-the-Fields, London. He was a celebrated athlete, winning a gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games. The marriage ended in divorce in 1946.
  • Children: The couple had three children:
    • Lady Davina Mary Cecil (born 1931): Later became Lady Davina Mary Barnard following her marriage.
    • John William Edward Cecil (born 1935).
    • Lady Angela Mary Rose Cecil (born 1938).
  • Family Connections: Through both birth and marriage, she was connected to two of Britain’s leading aristocratic families—the Buccleuch and Cecil dynasties.
  • Later Life: She was later appointed a Commander of the Order of St John (C.St.J.) and lived until 1984, passing away in London at the age of 80.
