Mme. Guilhermina Suggia Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, December 26 1925. LVIII No. 1512

The featured frontispiece is a portrait of Mme. Guilhermina Suggia, taken shortly before her departure to Portugal for her forthcoming marriage to Dr. José Casimiro Carteado Mena of the Oporto Pasteur Institute. Mme. Suggia and Señor Pablo Casals were widely regarded as two of the greatest violoncello players of their time. As a pupil of Casals, she helped establish a new school of cello playing that elevated the instrument’s status as a solo voice.

  • The Marriage: Suggia returned to Portugal to marry Dr. José Casimiro Carteado Mena, an X-ray specialist at the Oporto Pasteur Institute.
  • Relationship with Pablo Casals: She worked closely with Pablo Casals, with whom she lived and toured between 1906 and 1912. Although never married, she sometimes performed under the name “Mme. Casals-Suggia”.
  • Pioneering Status: Suggia is recognised as one of the first women to establish a distinguished career as a solo cellist, at a time when the role was largely dominated by men.
