Lady Cunliffe-Lister nee Mollie Boynton Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, April 11 1925. LVII No. 1475

The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of Lady Cunliffe-Lister, daughter of the Rev. Ingham Boynton, who married in 1912 the Rt. Hon. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, P.C., K.B.E., then known as Sir Philip Lloyd-Greame. Sir Philip and Lady Cunliffe-Lister later changed their surname under the provisions of the will of her grandfather, the first Lord Masham. Mary Constance “Mollie” Cunliffe-Lister and her husband became closely associated with the Swinton estate and prominent public life.

  • Lady Cunliffe-Lister (Mollie Boynton): Born Mary Constance Boynton in 1890, she was the daughter of the Rev. Charles Ingram Boynton, Rector of Barmston.
  • Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister: Born Philip Lloyd-Greame, he married Mollie in 1912. He was an influential statesman who served as Secretary of State for Air and Secretary of State for the Colonies.
  • The Name Change (1924): The couple changed their surname from Lloyd-Greame to Cunliffe-Lister in November 1924, a requirement for Mollie to inherit the Swinton Estate and the wealth of her grandfather, the industrialist Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham.
  • The 1st Lord Masham: Samuel Cunliffe-Lister was a notable inventor and textile magnate who purchased the Swinton Estate in 1882. When his sons died without heirs, the estate passed to his granddaughter, Mollie.
