Frequently Bought Together

Published in 1879, this remarkable antique botanical illustration is Plate 39, Philodendron cannaefolium (seeds and flowers), from Aroideae Maximilianae, an important nineteenth-century work documenting tropical plants of the Araceae family.

The publication was based on the botanical research of Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794–1865), the distinguished Austrian botanist renowned for his extensive studies of aroids. The work was prepared for publication by Johann Peyritsch and issued in Vienna by C. Gerold's Sohn.

Beautifully illustrated by Wenzel Liepoldt, this detailed colour lithograph depicts the flowers and reproductive anatomy of Philodendron cannaefolium, arranged as an extensive botanical study.

Tall open spathes, spadices, seeds and microscopic tissue sections fill the page in separate carefully labelled figures.

Pale yellow, olive green and soft rosy-brown tones create a complex yet harmonious scientific design. The softly aged paper background enhances the historical character of the original lithograph.

An appealing choice for botanical wall art, Plate 39, Philodendron cannaefolium would complement a living room, study, bedroom or gallery wall, whether displayed individually or alongside other botanical illustrations from the same 1879 collection.

Authentic Antique Botanical Artwork

Both files preserve the original nineteenth-century botanical illustration, including its intricate lithographic details, natural colouring, botanical identification and characteristic antique paper appearance.

The two formats have slightly different proportions to accommodate standard international printing and framing sizes. Minor differences in the surrounding paper margins may occur.

The botanical illustration occupies part of the original antique page, so the illustrated plant itself will appear smaller than the full stated print dimensions.

Your purchased JPG files are supplied without watermarks.

Larger printing sizes may also be possible at a reduced resolution, depending on your chosen printing service. Please see the Printing & Framing tab for further information.

ANTIQUE ORIGIN & COLOUR LITHOGRAPHY

The original botanical illustration comes from Aroideae Maximilianae, published in Vienna by C. Gerold's Sohn in 1879.

This important nineteenth-century botanical work was based on the research of Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794–1865), a leading Austrian botanist specialising in the Araceae (aroid) family. The publication was prepared by Johann Peyritsch following Schott's death.

The illustrations were produced using colour lithography, a sophisticated nineteenth-century printing process in which multiple colours were printed using separately prepared lithographic stones.

These illustrations were originally printed in colour, not individually hand-coloured.

Our digital reproductions retain the distinctive colours, fine botanical details and natural aged-paper appearance of the historical artwork.

PRINTING & FRAMING

Your purchase includes two high-resolution JPG files, prepared for printing in 3:4 and international A-series proportions.

Recommended Print Sizes at 300 DPI

  • 3:4 Ratio: Up to 18 × 24 inches (45.7 × 61 cm).
  • A-Series: Up to A2 (42 × 59.4 cm), including A3 and A4.

Printing at Larger Sizes

These files may also be printed at larger sizes, including 24 × 32 inches or A1, at a slightly reduced resolution of approximately 210–225 DPI.

This resolution can still produce excellent results for larger wall art. However, printing requirements vary, so we recommend checking with your chosen printing service before ordering an enlarged print.

Printing & Paper Recommendations

For the best results, we recommend using a professional printing service or a good-quality home printer with heavyweight matte, archival matte or fine-art paper.

The illustrations retain their original botanical details, natural colours and antique paper appearance.

Colours may vary slightly depending on your monitor, printer, ink and chosen paper.

Framing & Display

Both files are supplied in standard proportions to make printing and framing easier. You may also use a mat or carefully crop the surrounding margins to accommodate a different frame size.

Because the botanical illustration occupies part of the complete antique page, the illustrated plant itself will print smaller than the maximum stated full-page size.

Frames, mats and decorative objects shown in the product images are for display purposes only and are not included.

Gallery Inspiration: The additional multi-print room images are for styling inspiration only. Other botanical prints shown are not included in this purchase but are available separately from The Old Map Shop.

Please examine the product images and enlarged details carefully before purchasing.
