Frequently Bought Together

Published between 1857 and 1859, this antique botanical illustration is Plate 28, Dieffenbachia liturata, from Icones Aroidearum, an important nineteenth-century botanical work documenting tropical plants of the Araceae family.

The publication was produced under the direction of Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794–1865), the Austrian botanist renowned for his research into aroids. Published in Vienna, Icones Aroidearum is admired for its meticulous botanical illustrations and contribution to the study of tropical plants.

This detailed hand-coloured botanical lithograph depicts Dieffenbachia liturata, featuring whole plant. The original plate combines scientific observation with finely rendered botanical forms and carefully applied colour.

The composition and softly aged paper tones make this historic illustration an attractive choice for printable botanical wall art. Display it alone or with other plates from Schott’s Icones Aroidearum collection.

Authentic Antique Botanical Artwork

Both files preserve the original nineteenth-century botanical illustration, including its intricate lithographic details, natural colouring, botanical identification and characteristic antique paper appearance.

The two formats have slightly different proportions to accommodate standard international printing and framing sizes. Minor differences in the surrounding paper margins may occur.

The botanical illustration occupies part of the original antique page, so the illustrated plant itself will appear smaller than the full stated print dimensions.

Your purchased JPG files are supplied without watermarks.

Larger printing sizes may also be possible at a reduced resolution, depending on your chosen printing service. Please see the Printing & Framing tab for further information.

ANTIQUE ORIGIN & COLOUR LITHOGRAPHY

The original botanical illustration comes from Icones Aroidearum, published in Vienna between 1857 and 1859.

This important nineteenth-century botanical work was produced under the direction of Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794–1865), the distinguished Austrian botanist and pioneering authority on the Araceae (aroid) family.

The illustrations were produced using lithography, a nineteenth-century printing technique in which detailed botanical drawings were transferred onto lithographic stones and printed onto paper.

The coloured plates were individually hand-coloured rather than printed using multiple coloured lithographic stones. The extent of colouring varied between plates, with some illustrations featuring fully coloured botanical subjects and others combining colour with finely detailed monochrome anatomical studies.

Our digital reproductions preserve the beautiful original colouring, intricate botanical details and natural aged-paper appearance of these historical illustrations.

PRINTING & FRAMING

Your purchase includes two high-resolution JPG files, prepared for printing in 3:4 and international A-series proportions.

Recommended Print Sizes at 300 DPI

  • 3:4 Ratio: Up to 18 × 24 inches (45.7 × 61 cm).
  • A-Series: Up to A2 (42 × 59.4 cm), including A3 and A4.

Printing at Larger Sizes

These files may also be printed at larger sizes, including 24 × 32 inches or A1, at a slightly reduced resolution of approximately 210–225 DPI.

This resolution can still produce excellent results for larger wall art. However, printing requirements vary, so we recommend checking with your chosen printing service before ordering an enlarged print.

Printing & Paper Recommendations

For the best results, we recommend using a professional printing service or a good-quality home printer with heavyweight matte, archival matte or fine-art paper.

The illustrations retain their original botanical details, natural colours and antique paper appearance.

Colours may vary slightly depending on your monitor, printer, ink and chosen paper.

Framing & Display

Both files are supplied in standard proportions to make printing and framing easier. You may also use a mat or carefully crop the surrounding margins to accommodate a different frame size.

Because the botanical illustration occupies part of the complete antique page, the illustrated plant itself will print smaller than the maximum stated full-page size.

Frames, mats and decorative objects shown in the product images are for display purposes only and are not included.

Gallery Inspiration: The additional multi-print room images are for styling inspiration only. Other botanical prints shown are not included in this purchase but are available separately from The Old Map Shop.

Please examine the product images and enlarged details carefully before purchasing.
