George Lascelles and Gerald Lascelles Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, August 21 1926. LX No. 1544

The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of the Hon. George and the Hon. Gerald Lascelles, the little sons of H.R.H Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles and Viscount Lascelles.

  • The Hon. George Lascelles (1923–2011): As the firstborn, he eventually succeeded to the title of 7th Earl of Harewood. Outside of his noble duties, he was a distinguished figure in the arts, famously leading the Royal Opera House and building a reputation as a leading musicologist.
  • The Hon. Gerald Lascelles (1924–1998): The younger of the two brothers and a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, Gerald took a different path. He was a passionate jazz enthusiast and a major figure in British motorsports, serving as the President of the British Racing Drivers' Club.
  • Princess Mary, Viscountess Lascelles (1897–1965): The only daughter of King George V, she later held the title of Princess Royal. She was a central figure in the royal family’s public life throughout the mid-20th century
