King Fuad I of Egypt Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, April 17 1926. LIX No. 1528

The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of H.M. King Fuad I of Egypt, who was shortly to visit England. Born in 1868, he succeeded his brother as Sultan in 1917 and was proclaimed King in 1922. The heir to the throne, his son H.R.H. Prince Faruk, was born in 1920.

  • King Fuad I (1868–1936): Born in Giza, he was the son of Khedive Isma'il Pasha. He became Sultan in 1917 and adopted the title of King in 1922 following Egypt’s nominal independence.
  • Prince Faruk (1920–1965): Born in Cairo, he was the heir to the throne and later succeeded his father as King Farouk in 1936.
  • Visit to England: King Fuad arrived in London on July 4, 1927, in a state visit aimed at improving diplomatic relations between Egypt and Britain.
  • Reception: He was welcomed with full ceremony at Dover and received in London by King George V, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, and Foreign Secretary Austen Chamberlain.
  • Touring England: During his visit, he travelled to major industrial centres, including Manchester and Lancashire, where he visited cotton mills to discuss trade.
  • Significance: The visit was seen as an opportunity to address key issues of British influence in Egypt, including communications and regional defence.
