The Hon. Gwendoline Brooks Marshall Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, July 3 1926. LX No. 1537

The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of the Hon. Gwendoline Marshall, the younger daughter of Lord Marshall of Chipstead.

Gwendoline Brooks Marshall (1893–1983) was the younger daughter of Horace Brooks Marshall, 1st Baron Marshall of Chipstead, a prominent British publisher, newspaper distributor, and Lord Mayor of London (1918–1919).

  • Father: Horace Brooks Marshall was active in public service and Freemasonry, serving as Grand Treasurer of the United Grand Lodge of England and Treasurer of the Royal Masonic Hospital.
  • Mother: Laura Ellen Marshall (née Siggers).
  • Siblings: She had one sister, Nellie Marshall, who married the industrialist and film producer J. Arthur Rank. The family also had a son who died in infancy.
  • Personal Life: Gwendoline Marshall never married and had no children, remaining single throughout her life.
  • Philanthropy: She was actively involved in charitable work, particularly with the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls, continuing the traditions of her father.
  • The Barony: As there was no surviving male heir, the Barony of Marshall of Chipstead became extinct upon her father’s death in 1936.
  • Residency: She lived for many years at the family home, Shabden Park in Chipstead, Surrey, and later in London, where she died aged 90.
