The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of Lord Irwin, who was on his way to India to assume his duties as Governor-General and Viceroy. The only son of Viscount Halifax, he was born in 1881 and married Lady Dorothy Onslow, daughter of the 4th Earl of Onslow, in 1909.

Edward Frederick Lindley Wood (1881–1959), later 1st Earl of Halifax, was a senior British Conservative politician who served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India from April 1926 to April 1931.

  • Marriage: He married Lady Dorothy Onslow in 1909.
  • Family: At the time of publication, the couple had three sons and a daughter. In total, they had five children:
    • Lady Anne Dorothy Wood (1910–1995), later Countess of Feversham
    • Mary Agnes Wood (1910), who died at birth
    • Charles Ingram Courtenay Wood (1912–1980), later 2nd Earl of Halifax
    • Francis Hugh Peter Courtenay Wood (1916–1942), killed in action during the Second World War
    • Richard Frederick Wood (1920–2002), later Baron Holderness
