Miss Carolyn Ellis is the winner of the first Eric Hotung Award for Achievement, given to a woman for achievement on an expedition or challenging project. Miss Ellis won it for her part in the 1993 Taklamakan Desert Expedition on which she was the medic and only woman the first to complete the entire 780-mile crossing. Miss Ellis, who is 32 today, saw action in the Gulf War with Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps. She retired as a captain last year and now runs the family nursery garden business in Devon, devoting the winter to exploring and adventure Mozambique next..
