Miss Elizabeth Millicent Leveson-Gower Country Life Magazine Portrait, Frontispiece, March 7 1925. LVII No. 1470

The featured frontispiece this week is a portrait of Miss Elizabeth Millicent Leveson-Gower, the little daughter of the late Captain Lord Alastair Leveson-Gower and Lady Alastair Leveson - Gower, and heir presumptive to the Barony of Strathnaver and the Earldom of Sutherland.

  • Marriage: She married Charles Noel Janson (1917–2006), a journalist and foreign correspondent, on January 5, 1946.
  • Children: The couple had four children:
    • Alistair Charles St. Clair Sutherland (born January 7, 1947): The elder of twin sons, who succeeded his mother as the 25th Earl of Sutherland and Chief of Clan Sutherland.
    • The Hon. Martin Dearman Sutherland Janson (born January 7, 1947): Twin brother of Alistair; he married the Hon. Mary Balfour in 1974.
    • Lady Annabel Elizabeth Hélène Janson (born May 16, 1952): She married John Vernon Bainton in 1982.
    • The Hon. Matthew Peter Demarest Janson (1955–1969): The youngest son, who sadly died at the age of 14 while still at school.
  • Family Legacy: Upon inheriting the Earldom of Sutherland in 1963, she resumed the surname Sutherland in her capacity as Chief of the clan. Her eldest son also adopted the Sutherland name upon succession, while her other children retained the surname Janson.
  • Marriage & Later Life: Her marriage lasted for over 60 years, until her husband’s death in 2006, reflecting a long and prominent family life within both aristocratic and journalistic circles.
