1777 Nicolas Bellin Map St Lucia, Carte de L’Isle de Sainte Lucie

J.N. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L’Abbe Prevost’s ‘Histoire Generale des Voyages’, a 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these antique maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. The whole series was pirated with the maps copied and re-engraved and published by E. van Harrevelt in Amsterdam in 1777.

This antique map of the mouth of the lovely island of St. Lucia comes from that pirated Harrevelt edition and shows the island with only one road through the centre and a total absence of interior detail. The map serves more as a chart with anchorages noted because only real settlement ‘Vieux Port’ is shown.

This antique map measures 7.5″ by 11.5″ with two folds (as issued), has outline hand colouring, and is in very good condition..

This 1777 Nicolas Bellin Map St Lucia is currently listed for sale on eBay by the seller
