1720 Bowen Map of Newcastle, Northumberland Roads

Emanuel Bowen was one of the most influential of English cartographers during the early to mid-1700′s. However his popularity with publishers failed to provide him with a comfortable living and he ended his days in the poorhouse. His first published atlas ‘Britannia Depicta’ is also his best-known. He reduced the famous road atlas of John Ogilby to a smaller size and included a series of county maps. These strip road maps were extremely popular with travellers and the atlas went through many editions. This elegant map from the first edition of 1720 is typical of the series.

The map follows the road from Tinmouth, through Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Gateshead, Newborn, Ovington, Gorebridge, and ends at Hexham. There is fine detail to the many small villages, the Tyne river, hills, churches. The map has several compass roses, and the coat of arms of the bishoprick of Carlisle. There are charming descriptions of the towns in the margins.

The map measures 7″ by 4.5″, has hand colouring and is in good condition.
